The pros refer to eye level. That is basically the center part of the art, 1/4 down from the top. (Some people think it’s dead center, but that’s not true.)
Eye level varies from space to space space — the proportions of the room, the height of the person(s) viewing and the person’s culture all play a role. It is completely personal.
That being said, somewhere around 5′ or 5’5" is a good starting point.
