A client recently decided to add a stair runner on the main stair. They just had a baby and some homeowners prefer a carpet on the stair if they have kids. One thing for sure, it helps with noise!!!
So I inquired, what are you looking for? A pattern, a solid, diamonds? Something that looks like an oriental rug? What color? The options are quite varied. He said he wasn't sure so I told him I'd post some snapshots on the blog to show some ideas.
But before I show the snapshots, here are a few tips about carpeting stairs:
If the stair has been previously covered wall-to-wall, when you pull out the old runner, you will have little holes where the tacks were and no matter what you do, you cannot get rid of the the holes. Once it's wall-to-wall, I typically keep it wall-to-wall.
Do not skimp on the width of your runner. How wide should it be? Depends on how wide your stairs are.
If the stairs are not in good shape, it looks really great to paint the risers white and the treads black or a very dark color. A runner looks great against this look.
It's all about installation. Hire good quality labor.
Make sure to buy a carpet that is graded for a stair. Some are not appropriate and will not wear well.
Here are some pictures. I personally love a diamond and a striee on a stair.
PS It appears that all the stairs I am showing are broad loom cut down to make a runner (in other words – it's wall-to-wall that's cut on site). Many brands also carry pre-made runners, but then you are restricted to the width of the goods. Another option is a runner with a border either made from carpet or fabric or even leather (which for some reason I have no snaps shots).
What do you like?
