Well, it might not look like Spring here in Boston. (We had a big storm and I am sore from all the shoveling as proof.)
Here’s a great list: “100 Reasons to Get Rid of It” regarding spring cleaning from dear ole Martha Stewart including resources for recycling and donation.
From #92 on her list, the oft quoted
“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” -William Morris
I am an anti packrat — I don’t especially like a lot of stuff. Yes it’s true, I am a designer who’s not especially fond of chatchkis. But if my clients like it, I am more than happy to accessorize for them.
How much stuff you like or need seems to be personality related, and some people like more stuff around than others. Throw out too much stuff and some people are bound to feel very uneasy. Throw out too little and your life can feel crowded and overwhelmed. It’s a balance between the necessary and the sentimental with each person having a different comfort level.
But most people hold on to too much stuff and have too much stuff.
My motto: when in doubt, throw it out. (or recycle or donate…)
It’s cold here, a great day to clean out the closets and make room for great things to come this spring!
