A client recently saw a piece of art she really liked but wasn’t sure if it would look best over the sofa, or on a small wall. She called for advice on how to decide. This is what we did.
I had her create a mock up of the size of the art and tape it to the wall. She took a picture of each choice and emailed it to me. She also sent me a picture of the artwork so I could make sure it was appropriate for the room.
You see, the she shape, movement, composition, and the amount of color in a piece of art effects how much visual space it takes up, too. Still, a mock up is a good starting point.

P.S. We chose the smaller wall as the best place. She ended up getting 2 pieces for over the sofa.
